Living Together

Not everybody wishes to marry or enter a civil partnership, increasing numbers now cohabit.  The law that relates to cohabitants is often confusing and misunderstood.  There is no concept of common law marriage and so clients need to be properly advised when considering living together.

Often parties will make a joint purchase such as a family home and arrange their financial affairs in a certain way believing they are protected.  It is important therefore to understand the limitations and to protect both parties when entering into a significant decision such as living together.  A Cohabitation Agreement or Declaration of Trust may assist you in providing the security that you require and of course the certainty that you both seek.
